The Office of Research Administration (ORA) has updated its continuing education policy. A summary of the changes is provided below. The focus of the policy remains on continuous professional development. The updated policy can be accessed at: https://ora.emory.edu/guidance/ora_policies.html
Reduction in Total Required Hours
- The total required annual contact hours have been reduced from 32 to 15. This change aims to bring the policy in line with industry standards. Of the 15 required hours, 12 hours must still be in research administration to ensure staff remain updated regarding changing industry regulations and technologies.
- A 1.0-hour team building requirement has been included to enhance communication and collaboration. New ORA employees are still required to take the “Creating an Environment of Courtesy and Respect (CECR)” course within their first year of employment.
Inclusion of Research Administrative Staff
The policy has been expanded to include research administrative personnel outside of ORA. This broadens the scope of continuing education, promotes professional growth and development, encourages collaboration among staff, and aims to improve overall research administration quality.
Utilization of Brainier Learning Management System
Brainier has been designated as the primary system of record, providing streamlined tracking for Emory-related training. It incorporates on-demand training opportunities, encourages user-friendly access to resources, facilitates better management of continuing education, and provides transparency into training progress for employees and supervisors.
Summary: ORA Continuing Education Policy Update
The focus remains on effective training and development, with a commitment to supporting professional growth. Staff are encouraged to review the new guidelines. The policy will be reviewed annually.
