{"id":7685,"date":"2021-09-01T07:00:59","date_gmt":"2021-09-01T11:00:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/scholarblogs.emory.edu\/ranews\/?p=7685"},"modified":"2021-09-01T07:06:27","modified_gmt":"2021-09-01T11:06:27","slug":"emergency-preparedness","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/scholarblogs.emory.edu\/ranews\/2021\/09\/01\/emergency-preparedness\/","title":{"rendered":"Emergency Preparedness"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Now that campus has returned to in person activities, investing the time to learn how to protect yourself and others when there is an emergency contributes to your personal safety, the community\u2019s safety, and to community resilience.\u00a0September is National Preparedness Month, scheduled each fall in partnership with the Federal Emergency Management Agency to help communities be better equipped for the risks of accidents and disasters.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/scholarblogs.emory.edu\/ranews\/files\/2021\/08\/Emory-EOC.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-7686 \" src=\"https:\/\/scholarblogs.emory.edu\/ranews\/files\/2021\/08\/Emory-EOC-789x478.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"317\" height=\"193\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/emergency.emory.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-7688\" src=\"https:\/\/scholarblogs.emory.edu\/ranews\/files\/2021\/08\/CEPAR-round-logo-520x478.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"211\" height=\"194\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>CEPAR notes that the launch of a new academic year brings with it a reminder for the campus community to prepare for the unexpected, including updating contact information within Emory\u2019s Emergency Notification Program, downloading the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.emory.edu\/livesafe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">LiveSafe<\/a>\u00a0Safety app and discovering which campus locations have been designated as severe weather refuge locations.<\/p>\n<p>At Emory, emergency resources are in the palm of your hand, by using LiveSafe, a free mobile app. Developed for smartphones and tablets, the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.emory.edu\/livesafe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">LiveSafe<\/a>\u00a0app provides a quick, convenient and discreet way for students, faculty and staff to communicate directly with Emory University public safety officials.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.emory.edu\/livesafe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-7689 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/scholarblogs.emory.edu\/ranews\/files\/2021\/08\/Livesafe-app.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"486\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Key features of the app allow members of the campus community to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Call or message Emory University Police \u2014 or 911 \u2014 quickly. If you choose, a location-tracking feature can immediately signal your whereabouts to public safety officials.<\/li>\n<li>Quickly access a range of important campus safety resources, including information about emergency procedures, and health and wellness contacts.<\/li>\n<li>Receive push notifications of campus safety notifications and emergency alerts.<\/li>\n<li>Report safety concerns, accidents or crime tips in real-time to Emory police via text, photos, video or audio. The \u201cReport Tips\u201d function also allows you to immediately engage in a live chat with safety officials, if you choose.<\/li>\n<li>Navigate campus using a \u201cSafeWalk\u201d feature. The GPS-enabled location technology allows users to invite family, friends or colleagues to \u201cvirtually escort\u201d them by following their location in real-time on a digital map. Alerts are sent when the user is delayed, has arrived or summons help.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>CEPAR also developed the Emory University Preparedness Checklist, which provides directions for enrolling or updating emergency contact information in order to receive alerts in the face of severe weather, industrial accidents or police emergencies.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/news.emory.edu\/stories\/2020\/09\/er_preparedness_month\/thumbs\/student-checklist.pdf\"><strong>Download the Student Preparedness Checklist<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/news.emory.edu\/stories\/2020\/09\/er_preparedness_month\/thumbs\/staff-faculty-checklist.pdf\"><strong>Download the Faculty and Staff Preparedness Checklist<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The checklists also offer:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Basic safety information and reminders, such as a prompt to program phone numbers for Emory police departments \u2014 and adding an &#8220;In Case of Emergency&#8221; (ICE) number \u2014 into your personal mobile phone.<\/li>\n<li>Suggestions for establishing a simple emergency communication plan, so family and friends have an agreed-upon way to make contact during a campus or regional emergency.<\/li>\n<li>Prompts for knowing how to exit buildings if a primary pathway is blocked and where to seek shelter during severe weather.<\/li>\n<li>Handy contact information for campus emergency services, including health and counseling services, and the Emory Faculty Staff Assistance Program.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Emory Emergency Medical Service (EEMS) is a volunteer, student-led operation of Emory\u2019s Office of Critical Event Preparedness and Response (CEPAR) which provides a medical first responder service for emergency and non-emergency medical care to Emory University students, faculty, staff, visitors, and the surrounding community. EEMS works in coordination with local EMS and fire departments to provide quality, professional, confidential, and expeditious emergency medical care.\u00a0 To request EMS, call 911 or call the Emory Police at 404-727-6111.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/scholarblogs.emory.edu\/ranews\/files\/2021\/08\/Emory-EMS-vehicle.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-7687 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/scholarblogs.emory.edu\/ranews\/files\/2021\/08\/Emory-EMS-vehicle.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"633\" height=\"474\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>For Emory faculty, staff and students, the new semester is a great time to become familiar with the university\u2019s emergency resources. Reviewing the CEPAR website is a good start.
