Find Yourself in Senior Symposium REL 490W Spring 2025

April 2025 –

Ever wondered what you can do with a Religion degree in 2025 and beyond? Dr. Ellen Gough invites students to tackle this question and others in her Spring 2025 Senior Symposium, REL 490W.

Cobbling elements from other cornerstone Department of Religion courses, Dr. Gough’s symposium encourages seniors to research the topic of their choosing. With additional guidance from past Religion graduates, and professional religious figures, symposium students engage with diverse communities, through religious sites and deep readings in order to discover how the study of Religion has benefited others professionally as well as personally. This course intends to provide a real crystal-ball-opportunity for students, a forum for seniors to reflect deeply on their personal and professional goals, network with the larger religious community, and apply their studies to real life.

This spring, guest lecturers include Emory’s Buddhist Chaplain, the Venerable Priya Sraman, and guided tours to the Church of Scientology, the Atlanta Masjid of Al-Islam, and more.

The symposium focuses on one of six core goals integral to Emory’s study of Religion: How communities create systems of value in order to reflect critically on the challenges of modern citizens and consumers and to imagine opportunities for creative cultural and political engagement.
