In this analysis, we examined temporal changes in the risk of emergency department (ED) visits for cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) and asthma associated with short-term exposure to PM<sub>2.5<\/sub> in Los Angeles from 2005 to 2016, a period in which the implementation of emission control programs had led to changes in PM<sub>2.5<\/sub> concentration and composition. We observed significant changes in the risk of CVD (with an increased risk) and asthma (with a decreased risk) ED visits when PM<sub>2.5<\/sub> concentrations decreased over time. The observed changes in risk could be related to changes in PM<sub>2.5<\/sub> composition (<em>e.g.<\/em>, an increased fraction of organic carbon and a decreased fraction of sulfate) and other factors such as improvements in healthcare and differential exposure misclassification.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-540\" src=\"https:\/\/scholarblogs.emory.edu\/remote-sensing-group\/files\/2020\/07\/RR_periods.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1600\" height=\"992\" srcset=\"https:\/\/scholarblogs.emory.edu\/remote-sensing-group\/files\/2020\/07\/RR_periods.jpg 1600w, https:\/\/scholarblogs.emory.edu\/remote-sensing-group\/files\/2020\/07\/RR_periods-768x476.jpg 768w, https:\/\/scholarblogs.emory.edu\/remote-sensing-group\/files\/2020\/07\/RR_periods-1536x952.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><small><strong>Bi, J.<\/strong>, D&#8217;Souza, R.
