{"id":1267,"date":"2024-03-14T18:55:31","date_gmt":"2024-03-14T18:55:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/scholarblogs.emory.edu\/samothraciannetworks\/?page_id=1267"},"modified":"2025-11-05T15:03:23","modified_gmt":"2025-11-05T15:03:23","slug":"educational-gaming","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/scholarblogs.emory.edu\/samothraciannetworks\/educational-gaming\/","title":{"rendered":"Educational Gaming"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2>The Goals<\/h2>\n<p>In <i>Samothra<\/i><i>ce Mariner<\/i>, a study of ritual and mobility in the ancient world, the project is working to build bridges between:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>academic and scientific research, integrating theory and method from anthropology, geography, Classics, religion and ancient history<\/li>\n<li>pedagogical needs, supporting instructors in primary and secondary education<\/li>\n<li>gaming applications with broad potential for public education in the most informal of settings.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><em>Sailing with the Gods<\/em><\/h2>\n<p>As a part of these goals, the <i>Samothra<\/i><i>ce Mariner<\/i> project launched the <em>Sailing with the Gods <\/em>educational game project in 2016 with the following goals:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>to maximize immersion in the realities of sailing the ancient sea, closing the gap between our modern perspectives of sea travel and ancient realities<\/li>\n<li>to generate data recorded from players\u2019 behavioral patterns when making choices about how to move about the maritime networks<\/li>\n<li>to integrate ancient voices from history and mythology with geospatial realities of economic resources, political trends and potential for gathering up to date knowledge<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Emory Center for Digital Scholarship and Emory Classics Department supported development of the game, in partnership with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kennesaw.edu\/ccse\/academics\/software-engineering-and-game-development\/index.php\">Kennesaw State University<\/a>. The project began to develop separate casual educational games, now including <em>Kottabos VR, the Royal Game of Ur, <\/em>and <em>Petteia, <\/em>as minigames. These were originally developed to be components within the <em>Sailing with the Gods <\/em>game.<\/p>\n<p><em>Samothrace Mariner <\/em>is now focused on developing, in partnership with <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20250809022742\/https:\/\/www.kennesaw.edu\/ccse\/academics\/software-engineering-and-game-development\/index.php\">Kennesaw State University<\/a>, these games as freestanding <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20250809022742\/https:\/\/scholarblogs.emory.edu\/samothraciannetworks\/casual-educational-gaming\/\">casual educational games<\/a> for independent release. The games are being developed to release freely through the Steam gaming site for use in classrooms and independently.<\/p>\n<p>The following three games are all being redeveloped from minigames created by Kennesaw State game design students for <em>Sailing with the Gods. <\/em>You can find information on the students and their work on <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20250809022742\/https:\/\/scholarblogs.emory.edu\/samothraciannetworks\/introduction-2\/credits\/\">the Credits page<\/a>.
