This course is intended to complement the knowledge that students acquire in the formal classroom setting, thereby providing them with a space for intervention under the guiding principle of taking the classroom to the city.<\/p>\n<p>The goals of the course include improvement of oral communication skills as well as knowledge of key landmarks; urban sites that map, in the most eloquent way, the significance and influence of Buenos Aires\u2019s history, culture and society. Course activities take place outside of the classroom in the afternoons, and are focused on the use of spoken and written language with the pedagogical goal of discussing and reflect on a wide range of themes relating to students\u2019 lived experiences while abroad.<\/p>\n<p>The main purpose of these cultural sessions is to provide students with on-ste experiences that lead to a process of intellectual cross-pollination in which theory and practice intersect on a daily basis.<\/p>\n<p>Program assistants will take you to a theater play at one of the most renowned venues for Buenos Aires indie theatre, the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.elcamarindelasmusas.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cCamar\u00edn de las Musas\u201d<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>You will watch films at the IDES and go to the movie theater to watch a current\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cinenacional.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Argentine film production<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>You will be able to go to a Festival where various indie rock bands play in the context of the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ciudademergente.gob.ar\/home\/web\/es\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cCiudad Emergente\u201d<\/a>\u00a0rock festival sponsored by the Government of the City of Buenos Aires.<\/p>\n<p>You will have the opportunity to travel independently by joining a day boat trip to Uruguay and visiting\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.coloniaturismo.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Colonia<\/a>, a coastal city famous for having been owned by both the Spanish Empire and the Luso-Brazilian Empire. We may visit the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/islamgarcia.com.ar\/\" target=\"_blank\">Isla Mart\u00edn Garc\u00eda<\/a>, an island with a fascinating political history located in the R\u00edo de la Plata and shared by Argentina and Uruguay.<\/p>\n<p>We will visit a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lacinacina.com.ar\/\" target=\"_blank\">ranch in the Pampas<\/a>\u00a0(the Argentine Outback) first established in the 1880s, where you will have a traditional \u201casado\u201d (Argentine Barbecue), join a horseback ride excursion, and listen to gauchos (Argentine cowboys) play the guitar and sing \u201cmilongas\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>We will take a train trip northward and spend the day at the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/travel.nytimes.com\/2010\/11\/28\/travel\/28tigre-overnighter.html?pagewanted=all&amp;_r=0\" target=\"_blank\">Islands of the Tigre<\/a>, the delta where the Paran\u00e1 and Uruguay rivers converge to give birth to the R\u00edo de la Plata. You will join a guided tour to the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.buenosairesrowing.com.ar\/\" target=\"_blank\">Buenos Aires Rowing Club<\/a>, the first entity of its kind founded by the British in the Nineteenth Century.<\/p>\n<p>Program assistants and faculty will take you to art\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.proa.org\/esp\/\" target=\"_blank\">exhibits<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.malba.org.ar\/web\/home.php\" target=\"_blank\">museums<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mnba.org.ar\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\">galleries<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/centroculturalrecoleta.org\/ccr-sp\/\" target=\"_blank\">cultural centers<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.teatrocolon.org.ar\/es\/\" target=\"_blank\">the world-class Buenos Aires opera house<\/a>\u00a0(Teatro Col\u00f3n),\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cafetortoni.com.ar\/\" target=\"_blank\">traditional coffee houses<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rojas.uba.ar\/\" target=\"_blank\">university events<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.torquatotasso.com.ar\/\" target=\"_blank\">tango dancing venues<\/a>\u00a0throughout the city.<\/p>\n<p>You will be able to attend soccer matches and watch the most accomplished soccer teams duke it out in the playoffs leading to the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ole.com.ar\/\" target=\"_blank\">Argentine Championship Cup<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"panel-48-0-0-2\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_text panel-last-child\"><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The city of Buenos Aires can be viewed as an intellectual point of entry into urban culture, which offers its fascinating milieu to be lived and experienced in a direct manner.
