I really enjoyed this reading; I enrolled in this class because I was interested in learning the cultural implications of film, theater and preforming art. The role of theater in religion and military activity intrigued me. Latin america is a melting pot of Indigenous and Spanish culture, and Francians combination of Christianity and Aztec symbolism. Later in history “misioneros” educated rural areas on things like the bad alcohol. This was a more secular use of missionaries is really intriguing. And all though it isn’t necessarily a form of theater, there are set roles of the missionaries being the all helping savior of the poor, and the poor being helpless. Finally, I usually associate a “shock value” and personal dedication to the subject with performance art. However, the example of Las tres Caidas de Jesus Cristo, where the actor of Jesus is in seclusion for 30 days before the show changes that preconceived idea for me.
