Studying abroad was a decision that came naturally to me as someone with a deep curiosity about other cultures and a desire to step outside of my comfort zone. The Emory Sociology-Comparative Health Program immediately caught my attention because it offers a unique opportunity to delve into London\u2019s healthcare system while applying sociological theories in a distinct cultural context. This program not only promises academic enrichment; it also promotes personal growth through cultural immersion. Thankfully, the experience not only lived up to my expectations but exceeded them in ways I could not have imagined. From the friendships I formed to the personal growth I experienced; every aspect of the trip was more impactful than I anticipated.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

One of the most transformative aspects of studying abroad was how it expanded my worldview. Before the trip, my understanding of healthcare was largely shaped by what I had learned in classes and my experiences as a person of color. However, living in London allowed me to see how broken our healthcare system truly is. Despite advancements in medicine, health disparities disproportionately affect minority cultural groups due to an intersection of structural, socioeconomic, behavioral, and biological factors. These issues are also prevalent in the United Kingdom, but to a lesser extent due to the National Health Service, their universal health<\/span> care system.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On a personal level, studying abroad also boosted my confidence as an adult. I learned to trust my instincts and advocate for myself in unfamiliar situations. Whether it was identifying the right people to approach when completing assigned surveys or simply asking for directions, I enjoyed navigating these challenges on my own. Coming from New York, I found comfort in London\u2019s diversity and chaotic public transportation system. As someone who doesn\u2019t drive, I appreciated the freedom to explore the city with ease. I felt so at home in London that I am considering living there in the future.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This program also allowed me to build strong connections with peers I might not have interacted with otherwise. Interacting with people from diverse backgrounds gave me a more nuanced understanding of cultural differences and a deeper appreciation for the interconnectedness of the world. Despite having our own rooms, my peers and I spent countless nights together<\/span>,<\/span> bonding over shared experiences. We laughed about London\u2019s high costs, shared our anxieties about the future, and watched every episode of <\/span>Love Island<\/span><\/i>. These moments created lasting memories and I am eternally grateful for meeting these friends.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Given the chance, I would absolutely participate in long-term international travel again. While the prospect of studying abroad initially seemed frightening, it turned out to be one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. I am eager to explore other countries and regions to gain fresh perspectives and continue growing as an individual. Long-term travel offered me an unparalleled opportunity to step outside of my routine, engage deeply with another culture, and gain insights that can only come from lived experiences. If anything, my study abroad trip has further fueled my passion for travel and reinforced my belief in the importance of global engagement.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In conclusion, my study abroad experience in London was a journey of growth, discovery, and transformation. It exceeded my expectations in every way, leaving me with incredible memories and invaluable skills that will shape my future endeavors. I am immensely grateful for the opportunity, and I look forward to embracing more international experiences in the years to come.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
