This workshop will help students evaluate the following broader questions:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\"><\/span><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333\">How do materials and manufacture influence appearance, aging, preservation, etc.?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333\">How does time impact objects?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333\">What are the goals of cleaning and restoration? and Why is conservation sometimes controversial? Wet the ceramic tiles with water<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">2. Pour off liquid (lime milk) for later processes, and then transfer lime to a bucket<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">3. Add fine sand into the bucket (ratio of lime: sand = 1:1)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">4. Use a wood stirrer to mix sand with lime<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">5. Apply the mixture onto a tile<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">6. Use a plastic scraper tool to spread out the mixture evenly<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">7. Let the tile dry for 15 minutes<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">8. Cut the cartoon into approximately the same size as the tile<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">9. Transfer the outline of the cartoon onto the tile with a pokey tool<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">10. Add water to used pigments with a dropper<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">11. Transfer pigments to a paint palette with a glass rod<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">12. Add a little lime milk from step #2 to pigments with a dropper<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">13. Paint the tile with brushes<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">14. Let the tile dry<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #333333;font-size: 18pt\">Tips<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333\">Do not wear nice clothes. There are staining pigments used in this demo.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333\">Prepare fresco designs before class\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333\">To save time, skip the first and second preparation layers of the fresco.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333\">Set aside lime milk for further use in the process.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333\">Allow intonaco to sit ~30 minutes after mixing. Should resemble the consistency of cookie dough. Once time passes, ration the mixture onto each fresco and instruct to spread evenly.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333\">best to have 1\/8<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0inch thickness\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333\">do not attempt to reuse previously opened lime for the intonaco mix<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333\">do not spread with metal or organic materials\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333\">Once the layer is even, allow setting for ~30 minutes or until the surface is firm to touch.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333\">Mix the ground paints with distilled water until they are a muddy texture. Spread a bit of each desired color onto a palette. Use the salvaged lime milk (2-3 drops per color on the palette) to lighten the pigment into useable paint.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333\">Mix darker than the intended final product. Shades will lighten with drying.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333\">While painting, mix the desired color on the palette, not the fresco. The fresco will disintegrate\u00a0if too wet.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333\">Paint the background first, then add details.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333\">Keep the brush fairly dry while painting, but rinse in distilled water between each color use.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333\">Store the finished piece in a dry environment, otherwise, the paints will run.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333\">Clean all utensils with soap and water to prevent degradation by the lime to preserve them for future use.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;color: #333333\">Safety<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333\">Do not use metal tools to contact lime because lime will corrode metal<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333\">Always wear gloves because lime is highly alkaline, and it will dry hands<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333\">Always wear aprons<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">Do not use toxic pigments such as Vermillion Red.
