\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>How do conservators work with modern materials when the properties of their longterm aging are still unknown?<\/li>\n\n<li>Students will learn about the glass-making process and how glass is conserved. &#8211;<\/li>\n\n<li>Students will learn about the properties of polymer clay and how it and other synthetic materials are conserved.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-577\" src=\"https:\/\/scholarblogs.emory.edu\/techarthistoryactivities\/files\/2023\/05\/Roll-Into-Rods-e1608614559361-edited.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"281\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"https:\/\/scholarblogs.emory.edu\/techarthistoryactivities\/files\/2023\/05\/Roll-Into-Rods-e1608614559361-edited.jpg 614w, https:\/\/scholarblogs.emory.edu\/techarthistoryactivities\/files\/2023\/05\/Roll-Into-Rods-e1608614559361-edited-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 281px) 100vw, 281px\" \/>\n<figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Segments of Clay for Caning Workshop<\/figcaption>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;color: #333333\">Supplies<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Place mat (Clear sheet protector)<\/li>\n\n<li>Polymer Clay of different colors (Sculpy)<\/li>\n\n<li>Ziplock bags<\/li>\n\n<li>Knives<\/li>\n\n<li>Wide popsicle sticks<\/li>\n\n<li>Tray<\/li>\n\n<li>Oven<\/li>\n\n<li>Paper towel<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;color: #333333\">Steps<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Set out mylar placemats over work area<\/li>\n\n<li>Cut blocks of sculpy souffl\u00e9 clay into small blocks\/chunks for easier use<\/li>\n\n<li>Roll ~10 small snakes from blocks of clay<\/li>\n\n<li>Assemble ~5-6 small snakes into one thick cane<\/li>\n\n<li>Press snakes together so that cane holds<\/li>\n\n<li>Cut cane into ~1\/8-inch slices<\/li>\n\n<li>Assemble slices lying horizontal into circular or square pendant ~1-2 inches<\/li>\n\n<li>Make sure all slices are smushed together so that they don\u2019t fall apart<\/li>\n\n<li>Poke hole (if you want) with a needle\/skewer for string to be threaded through<\/li>\n\n<li>Bake pendants ~15 minutes to harden<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-580\" src=\"https:\/\/scholarblogs.emory.edu\/techarthistoryactivities\/files\/2023\/05\/Final-Results-e1608614219739-edited.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"369\" height=\"298\" srcset=\"https:\/\/scholarblogs.emory.edu\/techarthistoryactivities\/files\/2023\/05\/Final-Results-e1608614219739-edited.jpg 668w, https:\/\/scholarblogs.emory.edu\/techarthistoryactivities\/files\/2023\/05\/Final-Results-e1608614219739-edited-300x242.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 369px) 100vw, 369px\" \/>\n<figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Student Examples<\/figcaption>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;color: #333333\">Tips<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Some clay may be stiff- so warm it up with your hands<\/li>\n\n<li>Roll a snake out using both hands &#8211; start in the middle and move your hands outwards<\/li>\n\n<li>Do this as gently as possible<\/li>\n\n<li>Try to keep the size of the rolled-out section consistent so it will be easier to create a uniform design later<\/li>\n\n<li>The snakes do not need to be very long<\/li>\n\n<li>When laying out the cross sections to create the final pendant, squish each piece together as you go.<\/li>\n\n<li>The pieces will not melt and flow together when they are baked.<\/li>\n\n<li>Some dyes may stain your hands so roll out the lighter clays first<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;font-size: 18pt\"><strong>Safety<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p>There are minimal safety concerns in this workshop, as no toxic materials are being handled.<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Do not eat the clay polymer material.<\/li>\n\n<li>Be careful when cutting the clay.
