Emory & Atlanta Sports Teams Play Ball with Strategic Partnerships

Atlanta is home to a host of world-class sports teams, from football to fύtbol, who compete at the highest levels. But, as any fan knows, playing at that level doesn’t come without risk. The threat of injury in games or training is a constant threat. Luckily, Atlanta also houses one of the world’s premier healthcare and research organizations: Emory University. Over the past few years, the university’s healthcare program has established multiple strategic partnerships with teams across the city, from the Falcons to the Hawks, to provide state-of-the-art care to their athletes.

The Emory Sports Medicine Complex, a cutting-edge treatment and training facility, officially opened to patients on Dec. 4th, 2017. Having broken ground only a year and a half before in Brookhaven, GA, it was the result of a landmark partnership between the Atlanta Hawks franchise and Emory Healthcare. The campus houses multiple different facilities, including the Emory Sports Medicine Center, Emory Physical Therapy — and, of course, the Emory Healthcare Courts, the official training facility for the Atlanta Hawks filled with innovations and resources to assist members of the team.

Emory Healthcare also has strong relations with the WNBA, expanding their existing partnership with the championship-winning Atlanta Dream in February of this year, giving the team access to treatment from Emory Healthcare as well as access to the Sports Medicine Complex their NBA counterparts are housed in.

On March 8th, the Atlanta Falcons named Emory Healthcare their official team provider, after already having enjoyed years of service from physicians from the Emory Sports Medicine Center serving in leading medical roles. People like Dr. Spero Karas, orthopedic surgeon and head team physician for the Atlanta Hawks since 2011, have served both on the sideline and off to keep players and coaches alike healthy. For Super Bowl LI, he and Drs. Jeffery Webb and Brandon Mines travelled to Houston as members of the Falcons’ medical team. Emory Healthcare also hopes to use this partnership to also reach out to Falcons fans about the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle.

The Atlanta Braves have also been in a partnership with Emory Healthcare since early 2017. The strategic agreement provides the team with more than just world-class care. The Braves have access to both the performance measurement resources available through the Sports Medicine Complex and priority access to high-level care at all seven of Emory’s hospitals throughout the state, including a recently opened outpatient orthopedics clinic in Smyrna, GA. to facilitate easy access to care for the team.

Through these associations, Emory renews its commitment to its community. With all of its partners, Emory is dedicated to both providing the highest quality of care and teaming up to educate and promote the health of all Atlanta fans, in the city and beyond.

These initiatives are operated by the Emory Sports Medicine Center, a division of the Orthopedics & Spine Center. In addition to providing world class medical treatments, The Center is a leader in research into prevention, treatment, and recovery from athletic injuries available to the public as well as Atlanta’s professional athletes.
