Ignorance is Bliss

This week’s readings shed light on the corruption surrounding “Hot Spots” as well as the disparity in the amount of Africans fleeing to Europe versus the amount that are ultimately accepted as refugees. This is a global crisis and we must become more educated on the topic in order to increase the visibility of these “hidden” agreements between the EU and surrounding countries. The fact that Morocco is pocketing millions of dollars from the EU in order to have their return to their country “facilitated” is absolutely shameful. Instead of doing what the EU has ordered, they are dumping these political and economic refugees in the middle of the Sahara, thousands of miles from their home and where they just travelled. Often, their lives are in such danger that they will just turn around and trek right back to the enclave. This just goes to show how dire their situations are, and that they will do anything in order to escape their prior lives. Even though the EU is appropriating this money with the intention that the migrants will be safely returned, I highly doubt that they are unaware of what is actually going on. Powerful nations use their privilege to their advantage and simply turn a blind eye to any controversial actions that they can’t be caught up in.

The article from Sapiens highlighted how important each migrant’s interview really is. Their entire life has led up to this point, where their story could easily be deemed “not desperate enough”. It sickens me that any decent human could hear a story of war, death, and hunger and then tell another human being to their face that they have to return to that life. The EU claims that the existence of these hot spots are in support of everyone’s human rights, but its hard to believe that when nearly 99% of people in danger and forced to continue to live a life in peril.
