The Template for Intervention Description and Replication for WASH (TIDieR-WASH) checklist is a gold-standard, easily adoptable 14-item checklist for how researchers, policymakers, and practitioners report the implementation and context of WASH interventions.
Tracking and reporting the context and implementation details of water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) programs is essential to replicate, adapt, and scale effective interventions and to interpret evaluations. Standardized reporting allows for easier comparison of interventions and helps to identify the most effective approaches in different settings. Ultimately, this can lead to better-designed programs and policies to improve hygiene and health outcomes globally.
With funds from the Reckitt Global Hygiene Institute, Emory University and WASH experts developed the TIDieR-WASH checklist and guide by adapting and expanding the original TIDieR guide. A scoping review was conducted on existing guidelines for reporting implementation and current implementation reporting in WASH evaluations to create a list of potential items for the checklist. A four-stage review process with international experts was then used to reach an agreement.
| 1. Name Provide a name or phrase that describes the intervention. | |
| 2. Theory of Change Describe how the intervention is expected to affect the target outcomes. | |
| 3. Prior evidence Describe any prior effectiveness evidence for this or related interventions. | |
| 4. Location and setting List the geographical locations and settings where implementation occurred. | |
| 5. Context Detail all known relevant contextual factors for each location reached by the intervention. | |
| 6. Suitability Justify why the intervention is relevant and appropriate for where it was implemented. | |
| 7. Implementers List all the institutions who provided each intervention or type of activity. | |
| 8. Recipients Report the number of recipients or the population reached, and descriptive statistics of those recipients. | |
| 9. Targeting Report whether any intervention components were targeted to specific subpopulations, how they were targeted, and how the target subpopulations were identified. | |
| 10. Activities Provide a clear, detailed description of the activities included, their procedures, and supporting activities. | |
| 11. Intervention dose Quantify the frequency and number of contacts between implementers and recipients, and the duration of those contacts. | |
| 12. Fidelity Report fidelity monitoring and actual fidelity. Include any planned or unplanned modifications to the intervention. | |
| 13. Costs Report the program costs by activity category and input type. | |
| 14. Materials Describe all materials delivered as part of the intervention or used to guide the intervention. |
