The WHSC Library is proud to host the traveling exhibition, <\/span>Care and Custody: Past Responses to Mental Health, <\/span><\/i>from the National Library of Medicine. The exhibition is located on the plaza level of the library near the Information Desk.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The exhibition is on display from February 12 to March 23, 2024 during WHSC Library hours<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span>

About the Exhibition:<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The National Library of Medicine produced <\/span>Care and Custody: Past Responses to Mental Health<\/span><\/i><\/a>, guest curated by public historian and educator Anne E. Parsons, PhD (University of North Carolina at Greensboro).\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The traveling banner exhibition and companion website explore the treatment of people with mental health conditions throughout history, especially in the United States, bringing to light the tension that has existed between care and custody. Physicians, advocates, families, and government agencies have all contributed to the shaping of mental health policies. Care and Custody examines this history to understand how the country has moved away from custodial forms of treatment, toward more inclusive approaches, and worked to protect the rights of people with mental health conditions.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Care and Custody<\/span><\/i><\/a> includes an education component featuring a new university module and a digital gallery that further explores selected works from the historical collections of the NLM, which are also available in their entirety in NLM Digital Collections.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
