{"id":696,"date":"2017-03-28T12:32:07","date_gmt":"2017-03-28T16:32:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/scholarblogs.emory.edu\/whscl-news\/?p=696"},"modified":"2017-03-28T12:40:57","modified_gmt":"2017-03-28T16:40:57","slug":"medical-theory-influencing-the-work-of-william-shakespeare","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/scholarblogs.emory.edu\/whscl-news\/?p=696","title":{"rendered":"Medical Theory Influencing the Work of William Shakespeare"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-697\" src=\"https:\/\/scholarblogs.emory.edu\/whscl-news\/files\/2017\/03\/Shakespeare_news.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"229\" height=\"289\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Exhibit<\/p>\n<p>Shakespeare created some of the most memorable characters in literature.\u00a0 His understanding of human nature and personality was influenced by humorism, an ancient medical theory about how bodily fluids determined a person\u2019s physical and mental health, as well as personality.\u00a0 The National Library of Medicine\u2019s exhibit, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nlm.nih.gov\/exhibition\/shakespeare\/fourhumors.html\">&#8220;And there&#8217;s the humor of it&#8221;: Shakespeare and the four humors<\/a>, explores the Bard\u2019s allusions to this medical theory in his work and is on view at the Woodruff Health Sciences Center Library through April 22.<\/p>\n<p>Talk with Dr. Sheila T. Cavanagh- 11:30am on April 11<\/p>\n<p>As part of the exhibit, Dr. Sheila Cavanagh, Professor of English at Emory University and Founding Director of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.worldshakespeareproject.org\/\">World Shakespeare Project<\/a>, will talk about the exhibit, providing her expert commentary on the four humors and their place in Shakespeare\u2019s writings.\u00a0 The talk will be held in the Robert W. Woodruff Library, Jones Room, at 11:30 am on April 11, 2017.<\/p>\n<p>A Scavenger Hunt- Now through April 22<\/p>\n<p>Emory students, staff, and faculty are eligible to participate in a scavenger hunt about the exhibit.\u00a0 Forms are available at the WHSC\u00a0Library Information Desk and at Dr. Cavanagh\u2019s talk. \u00a0Learn about Shakespeare and the four humors while answering eight questions for a chance to win one of four Barnes &amp; Noble gift cards (1 for $30, 1 for $10, and 2 for $5).
