This year\u2019s theme is <strong>Data: Delivering a Better Future<\/strong> and a schedule of virtual events from several universities and data organizations can be found at the <a href=\"https:\/\/cms.icpsr.umich.edu\/love-data-week-2021-international-events\">Love Data Week 2021 website<\/a>, hosted by the ICPSR.<\/p>\n<p>Reflecting the impact of the global COVID-19 pandemic, highlights in the week\u2019s schedule include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Feb. 8 at 4 p.m. EST: Michigan Institute for Data Science presents a seminar with Misty Heggeness, Research Economist at the US Census Bureau, examining the <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/tCbmsYuq1j?amp=1\">impact of the COVID-19 shock on parents\u2019 labor supply<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Feb. 9 at 1 p.m. EST: National Library of Medicine hosts a session on <a href=\"https:\/\/nnlm.gov\/class\/love-data-week-how-open-data-can-support-pandemic-response\/29973\">How Open Data Can Support a Pandemic Response<\/a> with Bob Gradeck of the University of Pittsburgh Center for Social and Urban Research<\/li>\n<li>Feb. 11 at 12 p.m. EST: McGill University presents a conversation between artist Shelley Miller and epidemiologist Joanna Merckx: <a href=\"https:\/\/libraryrooms.mcgill.ca\/event\/3594152\">#CovidArt: Bridging the Gap Between Science, Art, and the Public<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For meaningful coverage on the relevance of data and computing in social justice work, we recommend two recent presentations:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/QGYse9iDPWI\">Data as Relation: Indigenous Data Sovereignty and Ethic of Care<\/a> from Kayla Lar-Son, Indigenous Services and Programs librarian at the University of British Columbia<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/gFtsqrHH9Mw\">Smash the Mainframe: The Collision Between Civil Rights and Computing<\/a> from Charlton McIlwain, professor of Media, Culture, and Communication, NYU<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Here at Emory, there are lots of data-related initiatives underway! The WHSC Data Science Initiative and the Emory Libraries have partnered to host an ongoing seminar series about <a href=\"https:\/\/guides.libraries.emory.edu\/rigor-rep\">Rigor and Reproducibility<\/a>. Past sessions are recorded and shared, and we welcome suggestions for future topics in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.quantitative.emory.edu\/\">Department of Quantitative Theory &amp; Methods<\/a> will be launching two exciting opportunities for data-interested undergraduates this spring, including a collaborative hacking competition with industry and university partners themed around human trafficking, and a pilot with a local municipality and the QTM ambassador cohort.
