Massive DVD-LEND Expansion Project Completed

Game of Thrones Season 3 and Omkara, two films available through our DVD-LEND program.

The Heilbrun Music and Media Library recently completed a massive project over the winter break to convert nearly 5,000 additional titles to DVD-LEND. Now over 13,000 DVDs–more than half of the total DVD collection–are DVD-LEND. James Steffen, the Film and Media Studies Librarian, reviewed the entire DVD collection to identify eligible titles. Sarah Ward, the Music and Media Coordinator, together with student assistants from the Music and Media Library and the Library Service Desk, performed the actual conversion and labeling of DVDs.

A large number of these films are not available through online streaming services such as Netflix. The only way to view them is on DVD.

The main criteria for selecting titles were:

  • Compatible with U.S. DVD players and computers.
  • Foreign language films that have English subtitle options.
  • Not rare and out of print.
  • Not higher priced educational titles or titles with special licensing restrictions.
