Woodruff Library Welcomes New MediaLab

In August, Student Digital Life opened MediaLab in the former Emory College Language Lab space across from the Music & Media Library desk. This new multimedia production space is equipped with industry leading tools and services and allows students to create projects using a variety of software and hardware.  Along with video (Adobe Premiere and Final Cut Pro) and audio (GarageBand and Audition) editing and production applications, the 18 27” Retina 5K display iMacs are installed with graphic design (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) and web development (Dreamweaver and Flash) applications. Using either of the 3D modeling applications (SketchUp and Blender), students can render 3D designs that they can print on one of the 3D printers in TechLab located in the Computing Center at Cox Hall.MediaLab2-462-305

Four of the workstations provide access to lynda.com, a “leading online learning company that helps anyone learn business, software, technology and creative skills”. Along with access to over 3,800 video courses, students can follow along and practice with instructor files.

The MediaLab is open when the Music & Media Library is open, but is staffed by team of highly skilled and knowledgeable student staff support from 12pm – 8pm Monday – Friday.  Staff provide just-in-time assistance as well as scheduled consultations for more in-depth questions. Supervised by Alex Kyrychenko, Coordinator of Woodruff Library Learning Commons, these staff bring experience and expertise using the various supported MediaLab applications and undergo rigorous training to further develop their skills.

Scanning, EaglePrint color printing and Intuos Pro creative pen tablets round out the hardware resources available now. By late October, large format (up 24” wide) color printing will also be available.

Another exciting new feature coming to MediaLab later in the academic year is instructional presentation technologies to support small faculty-led training sessions and student-led workshops.
