Identifying and addressing skin health disparities in sexual and gender minority (SGM) persons

Despite increasing national focus on the health of SGM persons – an National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD)-designated health disparity population including persons who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender – little is known about skin issues disproportionately affecting SGM persons.

Dr. Yeung and colleagues authored a two-part CME article series in The Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology (JAAD) and an inaugural chapter in a major textbook to expand education for dermatologists and trainees on caring for LGBT/SGM persons. They also highlighted specific health disparities faced by non-binary and gender non-conforming persons.

Culminating from this work, they founded the American Academy of Dermatology’s LGBT/SGM Health Expert Resource Group, which Dr. Yeung currently serves as its Vice Chair. They have since incorporated skin health disparities in SGM persons in the AAD Basic Dermatology Curriculum and advocated to change the gender-biased FDA system which hinders transgender patients’ access to acne treatment using isotretinoin.
