Teaching & Learning Technologies has been hard at work this summer to add and enable new functionality to make Canvas flexible and functional for fall 2019 courses. Here are a few of the updates and changes you’ll find when you log in.
Canvas Studio
Formerly Arc, Canvas Studio allows both faculty and students to easily integrate video throughout Canvas. Video can be captured from Webcam or desktop capture, uploaded from exported video files or imported from YouTube. Uploaded Studio videos support automated captioning, in-video quizzing and commenting, and can be added almost anywhere in Canvas: Pages, Discussions, Assignments and more. To learn more about Studio, check out our support documentation, the Canvas Guides or sign up for a training session.
NameCoach
Ever have trouble remembering how to pronounce a student’s name? With NameCoach, students can record the pronunciation of their name once and the recording will be available to faculty in all of their classes. Read our support documentation to learn more about using NameCoach and encourage students to record their pronunciations.
OPUS Crosslistings
Courses in Emory College and Laney Graduate School that have official crosslists in OPUS are now automatically crosslisted in Canvas. These crosslisted courses will have the correct parent-child course relationships and will have separate Canvas sections for each of the crosslisted courses. Proactively crosslisting these courses will help reduce faculty workload, reduce the need for support requests and better align Canvas data with OPUS. Read our enrollments documentation for more information.
And more!
- MATLAB Grader is now available as part of the university MATLAB license and is integrated into Canvas in ECAS courses.
- Students can now add file attachments to discussion forum posts (faculty can toggle this option off in the discussion settings menu)
- Many new features continue to be added to the optional New Gradebook, which faculty can try out in courses or sandboxes by toggling it on in the Course Settings area.
If you want to learn more about these features or any other Canvas functionality, we encourage you to join us for a training session, request a one-on-one consultation, open a ticket at classes [at] emory [dot] edu or contact Canvas support 24/7 by using the help menu within Canvas.
