What do we study?

Understanding the complex drivers of behavior and developing effective support systems is vital for addressing the challenges of addiction and public health. Research in the Basic and Applied Addictions Research (BAAR) Lab focuses on advancing knowledge regarding substance use and its related health outcomes.

Our interdisciplinary team of scientists and scholars is particularly dedicated to developing and testing digital tools and innovative strategies to better understand the mechanisms behind addiction. By uncovering what drives these behaviors, we aim to improve how we support individuals and communities affected by both substance use and HIV.

The BAAR Lab’s core philosophy rests on the production of high-quality empirical science through a commitment to rigor and the inclusion of diverse perspectives. We view our research participants not just as subjects, but as respected collaborators who offer essential insights into the difficult moments they face. Through this collaborative approach, we strive to create impactful scientific advances that benefit both science and society!

How can digital tools and new strategies help us understand the drivers of addictive behaviors?

Digital tools allow our team to go beyond traditional methods to observe behaviors in real-time, helping us better understand what truly drives addiction.

By developing and testing these innovative programs, we can gather precise data on the mechanisms behind these behaviors as they occur in daily life. This modern approach provides the evidence needed to move from general theories to specific, actionable insights.

In what ways can we better support individuals and communities affected by substance use and HIV?

We believe that the best support comes from treating those directly affected as respected collaborators rather than just research subjects. Because our participants often face very difficult moments, we use their essential insights to develop strategies that are truly responsive to their needs.

Our goal is to create high-quality, empirical science that directly informs programs and supports designed to improve health outcomes and quality of life for these communities.

How can team science and rigorous empirical methods improve the quality of addiction research?

Quality research depends on rigor, meticulousness, and diverse perspectives.

Our lab operates on a “team science” model where scientists, coordinators, and students combine their unique lived experiences and expertise to solve complex problems. By adhering to strict ethics codes and prioritizing high-quality data over speed, we ensure that our findings are both scientifically sound and socially responsible.
