For the podcast assignment I chose to listen to the one entitled “Turn a Passion Into a Career” where Kate Barney discusses her experience with finding her passion despite having different initial goals. I really resonated with this because although it isn’t a career, I chose to major in art history despite being pre-med where I thought majoring in a STEM subject was a requirement. I remember taking my first art history class after I had already declared biology as my major and absolutely falling in love with the subject. I didn’t even consider majoring in it and was so disheartened to keep signing up for chemistry, biology, and physics courses that were so boring to me until I ended up talking to an advisor about the future and she encouraged me to major in something I loved, no matter how unrelated it was to medicine. This reminds me of Barney’s experience studying for the LSAT and deciding to go to law school because she didn’t know what else to do. I wish I had seen this podcast earlier since I’m about to graduate and have already completed the art history major which I have loved every second of, however freshman year Ayla would have truly benefitted in giving it a listen. However I think this podcast will be applicable as well in post-grad life since I haven’t gotten in to a medical school yet and don’t know what it will be like. I therefore think prioritizing or at least looking out for passions no matter how different or unexpected they are will truly benefit me in the long run.
