By centering Black and Indigenous women survivors’ voices about their experiences in healthcare in Maricopa County, Arizona, the findings from this study will inform future healthcare recommendations to improve systemic healthcare responses to survivors of sexual assault 

This Maricopa-county based study is seeking Black and Indigenous women survivors of sexual assault and healthcare decision-makers participants

Women Survivor

  • Must be 18 or older
  • Identify as a Black and/or Indigenous woman
  • Experience in healthcare following sexual assault
  • Have a valid email address

Healthcare Decision-Maker

  • Must be 18 or older
  • Hold a formal healthcare position in Maricopa county
  • Have a valid email address

Steps to Participate

To join or participate in this study, complete the following four steps:

  1. Select either survivor and/or healthcare decision-maker below. This will forward you to a brief screening process to ensure eligibility to participate.

2. After screening, if you are eligible you will be forwarded to a consent form to review.

3. If consenting to participate, you will have access to Calendly to schedule an individual virtual interview via Zoom.

4. Following completion of the interview and sociodemographic questions, you will receive a link to a brief exit survey to confirm your choice of compensation and to receive a list of resources to use as needed.

What does participation involve?

Participation in this study entails a virtual individual interview and completion of sociodemographic questions via Zoom. 

Who is eligible to participate?

Both Black and/or Indigenous women survivors of sexual assault and healthcare decision-makers in Maricopa county.

How do I participate?

Under the ‘Join’ button you can begin a brief screening process to ensure eligibility to participate. If eligible, you will be forwarded to a consent form to review. If consenting to participate, you will be forwarded to Calendly to schedule a virtual interview session.

How much time does participation take?

Interviews typically range from 1-2 hours, while sociodemographic questions typically range from 30 minutes to 1 hour to complete. 

Is there compensation for participating?

Yes, participants receive $113 in the form of an electronic gift card (Amazon, Walmart, Target, or Regal), check, or ClinCard of choice, as well as a list of available resource to use as needed.

Who will I be conducting the interviews?

The lead scientist of this project will be conducting interviews (Dr. Ashley Ruiz). You can read more about the scientist conducting interviews under the ‘About the Scientist’ section.

About the Scientist

Dr. Ashley M. Ruiz, PhD, RN

Dr. Ashley Ruiz is an Assistant Professor at Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing at Emory University with clinical expertise in Forensic Nursing.  She focuses on improving the healthcare response to racial and ethnic minority women experiencing sexual assault. Her program of research specializes in examining interactions that cause secondary victimization, or re-traumatization, in healthcare delivery to survivors of sexual assault.
