For my midterm, I do a close reading of a song to discuss how as a medium it captures the experience of a queer individual from the experiences of their social life and difficulties to express. For me, in this essay, the strengths I had were my ability to discuss how the song implicates a sense of ambivalence when it comes to expressing one’s queerness. In addition, I indicate that there is an argument that conforming to society and expressing their queerness is both important and something that should be strived for. The difficulties that I had with the essay were some of my transitions and how I could properly formulate my argument. In addition, through this process, I was able to learn how to make my sentences more concise. Separating them into smaller sentences would help the flow of my essay become much better. In terms of the reading process as well, I was able to distinguish my ideas from the text to bring out more of my argument rather than listing out the sections of the song. The skills I would like to cultivate are how I can compartmentalize concepts in my introduction as topics and have topic sentences to show that.
