Reading Journal – Prompt 14

At first, I thought “queer reading” was just reading works and pieces about members of the LGBTQ+ Community. I’ve come to understand queer reading as a way of interpreting texts that involves analyzing and questioning the ways in which gender and sexuality are represented and constructed within the text.  Queer reading also can be applied to a wide range of texts, including literature, film, television, and other forms of media. It is often used as a tool for critically examining the ways in which texts reproduce or challenge dominant cultural narratives around gender and sexuality, and for uncovering the ways in which these narratives are shaped by historical, social, and cultural contexts. It can also be a valuable way for individuals to explore and understand their own queer identities and experiences, and to find representation and validation in media that may not have been intended to be inclusive or affirming.
