(GENRE ANALYSIS & MUSIC)

“Love Drought” is a song by Beyoncè that was released on her album “Lemonade” in 2016. The song was produced by Beyonce herself, along with producers Kevin Cossom and Hit-Boy. The song is also a mid-tempo ballad that features a piano-driven instrumental and introspective lyrics that explore themes of love, relationships, and communication. The song’s lyrics address the difficulties and challenges that can arise in a relationship. ‘Love Drought” also addresses themes of infidelity and the pain and anger that can be caused by a partner’s betrayal. The song also touches on themes of forgiveness and the need to let go of resentment and anger in order to move forward and heal. In the chorus, Beyoncè sings:

“Tell me, what did I do wrong?

Feel like that question has been posed

I’m movin’ on

I’ll always be committed, I been focused

I always paid attention, been devoted”

Here, Beyoncè seemingly grieves her relationship and seems to ruminate what she could have possibly done to deserve being cheated on. However, it could also be interpreted as her directing her resentment toward the individual that cheated on her. As a popular and successful musician, Beyonce has a wide and diverse audience that includes people of all ages, backgrounds, and demographics. It is likely that “Love Drought,” like many of her other songs, has a broad appeal and is enjoyed by a wide range of people. However, considering that at this time, Jay-Z was revealed to have been unfaithful, the song could be simply for Beyoncè as an outlet for her emotions. Overall, “Love Drought” is a thought-provoking and emotional song that speaks to the complexities of relationships and the importance of finding ways to connect and communicate with those we love.
