Is Your Chemical Waste Stored Properly?

Chemical waste generated during research activities must be stored by specific criteria. The storage area for laboratory chemical waste is termed Satellite Accumulation Areas (SAA). There are three C’s for proper SAA waste chemical storage containers:

  • Closed – All chemical waste containers must remain closed except at the moment the container is being filled.
  • Contents Identified – Contents must be identified. Please use labels provided by EHSO including the GHS hazard class label pictogram label provided.
  • Container Integrity – Chemical waste containers must be compatible with the contents and the container must be in good condition.

It is also recommended that chemical waste containers be stored in secondary containment and stored away from sinks or other drains.

The above items are verified during EHSO inspections and can be potentially audited by an external regulatory agency.
