Empathy or Negligence?
Although many times we do not realize, there are many injustices in the world. Since we live in a first world country, the majority of injustices that are revealed to us are committed by non first world countries. In reality, first world countries such as the United States of America and many in the European Union commit similar injustices. The harsh and inhumane conditions in Africa force many of the people to leave their former lives and risk everything to start anew or send back resources from Europe. Rather than lending a hand or easing the situation, the European Union concocted a process that made seeking refugee status nearly impossible. The “hot spots” that have been set up do not increase efficiency nor the ability for people to cross. Once it becme less advantageous for these countries to accept people for their workforce, the hot spots treated the people increasingly hostile. Many of the people are treated poorly and turned away like cattle. Instead of spending money to enhance the process that plagues each refugee, the European Union allocated much resources towards ensuring the people could not cross the border. The money is essentially funding inhumane treatment at these borders, as the patrol routinely physically harm and deport these people. Furthermore, this treatment causes longer term harmful effects to these refugees as many of them develop physical and mental conditions. Many of the refugees ultimately become afflicted with depression or anxiety, so if they do cross or are sent back, they would be in a worse situation.
