Why use the Academic Pass to read the NYTimes Web version?

On March 28, 2011, The New York Times began charging for access to its Web edition. Most people, except those with subscriptions, are capped at viewing 10 articles each month before charges are levied.

The new NYT paywall impacts shared computers here in the library, since the 10-article limit applies to public and personal computers.

***In addition to reading The New York Times with Academic Pass, you may also read NYTimes articles in databases, in print, and in microfiche.

Find NYTimes Articles Using Databases:

You can still access the full text of NYT articles through several library databases:

For all of these (except PROQUEST) you will need to select “New York Times” from the source list.

***Note that the above databases only provide access to the text of an article, not images (neither photos, charts, nor page images).

Access The New York Times Archives with Proquest Historical

As a reminder, we also have access to the Proquest Historical Newspapers archive of the NYT, which now includes articles from 1851 – 2007 and includes page images, rather than just text. We also hold issues of past NYT on microfilm.

Access the current print version of The New York Times

In addition, the library continues to subscribe to the print NYT. Recent print copies are kept in the newspaper reading room (adjacent to the Matheson Reading Room) until they are replaced by microfilm.

For more information on the Times’ new policy, visit their FAQ.  Also note that Emory students and faculty also qualify for the College Readership Digital Subscription discount program (note: when you enter “emory” in the “Find your college” box, you may get a message that Emory is not included in the plan, so try clearing your browser’s cache and/or be sure to choose “Emory University” from a drop down list of college names starting with “E” (and you may need to try this more than once) in order to be recognized — then you will be prompted to set up a subscription) as well as their education rate for print + digital subscriptions (e.g. Sunday paper + digital subscription for $3.75/week).
