Screen Shot 2014-09-18 at 10.37.18 AMIn a moderated panel, Cecily Boles and Catherine Barth will detail their experiences doing research in archives during the summer of 2014. They will examine the similarities and differences of working in Rome and the United States and provide some steps to take before embarking on research trips.

Screen Shot 2015-03-05 at 9.47.33 AMThe brown bag speakers are both current graduate students in Emory’s Department of Art History.  Catherine Barth studies twentieth-century American photography. Her current research focuses on West Coast photographers Ansel Adams and Wynn Bullock. She will detail her summer research for the High Museum Mellon fellowship at the Center for Creative Photography Archives in Tuscon, AZ.  Cecily Boles is examining sculpted female portraits to see how seventeenth-century Roman women were presented and, at times, presented themselves, in the costly and permanent medium of the marble portrait bust. She will combine visual study with historical and biographical research to create a fuller understanding of women’s agency and self-fashioning in baroque Rome. She will discuss her summer research visits to Roman archives.

Both speakers completed Emory’s Archives Training Program.  The Summer 2015 Using the Archives workshop will be held on non-consecutive days, May 18 and 21, 2015 with sessions taught from 9am-4pm (application process begins April 1, 2015)
