Featured databases: Newspapers.com and NewspaperArchive are two large databases of digitized newspaper backfiles from the 17th to the 21st centuries. Papers are primarily from North America and the United Kingdom; however, they also contain English-language titles from a handful of other countries in Europe, Asia and Australasia. Need papers from Panama or Ireland? Check out Newspapers.com. From Jamaica, Japan or Algeria? Try NewspaperArchive.com.
The dates covered vary by geographic region and newspaper. NewspaperArchive for instance includes 172 newspapers from New York state. Among them are: The New York Herald from 1763 to 1902, Canandaigua Daily Messenger from 1922 to 1977, the Allegany Democrat from 1882 to 1905, and The Syracuse Star from 1875 to 2013.
Start with these hints: The newspapers included in these databases don’t appear in the library catalog. To find them, go directly to Newspapers.com or NewspaperArchive, log-in and click on the “Browse” tab. You can also see a list of titles included as of November 2016 here: NewspaperArchiveTitles and Newspapers.comTitles.
