Meet our 2018-2019  Fellow – Joshua Fjelstul

This fall LITS welcomes five fabulous 2018-2019 Emory Libraries/Emory Center for Digital Scholarship (ECDS) Fellows.  We hope this blog series of interviews will help you get to know them better.  Funded by the Laney Graduate School, Emory Libraries and Emory Center for Digital Scholarship (ECDS) award fellowships to advanced graduate students expecting to complete their dissertations by the end of the academic year. Fellows are placed  in a department related to their subject specialization or interest, culminating in a formal presentation in the spring. Mark your calendar for April 10th from 2pm to 3:30pm in the Jones Room.

Welcome, Joshua Fjelstul, who is working in the Data Services area Emory Center for Digital Scholarship in Data Services.

  1. Tell us a little bit about yourself. Where are you from? What’s your favorite book?

I’m a Ph.D. Candidate in Political Science at Emory University. I’m from Austin, Texas. I did a B.B.A in Business Honors and a B.A. in Government Honors and History at the University of Texas at Austin before coming to Emory for my M.A. and Ph.D. My favorite books include Harry Potter and The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. One of my favorite things to do in Atlanta is going to Atlanta United games. I’m an avid Atlanta United fan.

  1. What are you researching for your dissertation?

I study international political economy, international institutions, and comparative judicial politics. My research focuses on the political economy of economic integration, the political economy of noncompliance with international law, and the judicial politics of international and constitutional courts. I am broadly interested in how international institutions constrain the behavior of states and how the design of institutions conditions their ability to promote international cooperation. I use a combination of game theory and quantitative methods, including causal inference techniques. My dissertation is about policy implementation and noncompliance in single markets, like the European Union.

  1. What interested you about this Fellowship?

I wanted to do the Emory Libraries/ECDS Fellowship in data services to use my skills in quantitative methods to help undergraduate and graduate students to conduct their own quantitative research and to further develop my skills with various statistical programs.

  1. What will you be working on this year for your Fellowship?

I specialize in quantitative data analysis, data visualization, and text analysis. At ECDS, I provide data services (finding, cleaning, and manipulating data) for Emory faculty and students. I also teach workshops on R programming.
