Grab some popcorn for Emory University’s second annual Home Movie Day on Thursday, Oct. 20, at 3 p.m., hosted by Emory Libraries Preservation Office.
This online event is an opportunity to explore interesting films from Emory University’s collections, consider film as a window into community history, and learn about the work of film preservation. The program will feature an Emory Libraries audiovisual conservator and a Rose Library collections archivist, who will share film clips from the Rose Library’s William Levi Dawson and James Vinson Carmichael papers as well as tips on how to care for your own home movies.

• Introduction: Nina Rao, audiovisual conservator, Emory Libraries
• Film from James Vinson Carmichael papers collection in the Rose Library titled “Portrex” (run time 12:05), presented by Nina Rao. An Emory alumnus, attorney and businessman, Carmichael served two terms as a Georgia legislator (1935-1940) and was a candidate for governor (1946). He was the first president of the Atlanta Arts Alliance (1964) and a trustee of Emory University and Atlanta University.
• Film from William Levi Dawson papers collection in the Rose Library, excerpts from William Levi Dawson home movies, trip to West Africa, 1952-1953 (run time: 25:48), presented by Laura Starratt, senior collections archivist, Rose Library. Dawson was a famous African American composer, conductor, and educator who trained in and later taught music at the Tuskegee Institute.
