Background

Dr. Matthew Dudgeon is an Internal Medicine Hospitalist at Emory University Hospital and an Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine at Emory University.  During his time at Emory, he wrote his dissertation on the investigation of men living in post-war Guatemala and how this context affected their own reproductive experiences and decisions, how they influenced the reproductive health of others – primarily that of women and children –, and their altering perspectives on marriage, pregnancy, childbirth, and contraception.  Currently, Dr. Dudgeon seeks to provide the highest quality of care to deaf, hard-of-hearing, and non-English speakers patients and family members by providing proper interpreter services and advocating for equity within healthcare.

research interests

His research interests center on a gendered approach to medical anthropological perspectives pertaining to reproductive health — more specifically, on HIV antiretroviral therapy.  He just recently published a study that compared clinic retention, virological outcomes, drug resistance and mortality between peri-urban and rural settings in South Africa after first-line ART.
