Do 4 things before you meet your advisor

From Career Center Senior Director Natasha Patel

1Ls: Now that you’ve completed the Career Strategy course, it’s time to meet with your advisor. A little preparation will make the most of your first meeting. Here are a few tips.

Make your resume employer-ready

Upload your resume to Symplicity and make sure it includes all the revisions your advisor recommends. She knows the essential information and formatting that legal employers expect to see.

Review career pathways

Week One slides from the Career Strategy Class are a guide to launching your legal career. Review how pathways influence your opportunities. This will allow you to have a more substantive conversation with your advisor.

Dive into Symplicity

You will use the Symplicity database throughout your time as a student, and perhaps later, as an alumna/us. Familiarize yourself with the system and its resources. Use your Emory email address to create an account for both Vault and Legal Compass.

Keep an open mind

Being focused but flexible is the best approach when you start considering legal careers. Our advisors are professionals with years of legal experience and most hold JDs. They’re exceptionally capable of answering your questions and helping you make informed career choices that suit your short term and long-term aspirations. Flexibility with a focus will reveal opportunities you may not have considered.

We look forward to working with you!
