1Ls: One semester down, what’s next?

Dear 1Ls,

Congratulations on completing your first semester of law school, no small feat!

Over winter break, start to consider summer employment and experiential opportunities.

Both public and private 1L positions are now posted in Symplicity. You’ll also find many employer-sponsored holiday open houses there. Commit to connecting with at least one practicing attorney during this holiday break. Refer to the “Building Professional Relationships” presentation, found on the career resources page.

  • Most employers accept applications on a rolling basis, which means they are reviewed as they are submitted. So getting them in early can be an advantage. (You can update with your transcript once semester grades are released.) Reminder: it’s important to carefully adhere to application requirements.
  • One-page resumes only!
  • Keep an open mind. Experience matters, so go to the opportunity.
  • Once you’ve secured a summer opportunity be sure to report the name and location of the employer to your career advisor.  It’s our professional responsibility!
  • If you haven’t already done so, schedule an appointment with your career advisor early in the New Year.

A reminder: Our offices are closed December 24 to January 3. We’ll reopen Tuesday, January 4.

Best of luck! We look forward to working with you.
