Gauvin Bailey’s “The New Plant of the Primitive Church” took a unique approach to introduce history and art in the sense of gardens and plants in them. Nature can reveal history about church and religion. This is interesting because people don’t usually notice the connection between seemingly non-connected objects.

In the movie the Mission, the director and people who created the film definitely took a lot of consideration in the historical accuracy of architecture and art in the period. There are inaccuracies like the color of the sculptures which should not be white, instead they should be colored. However, the details are still amazing since the study on the color of the sculpture was still a debate at that time.

Through the movie, I am impressed by the power of art. The scene when the Jesuit is playing the musical instrument is just beautiful. When the native people first saw the picture of Mary and cross, I felt the sense of understanding that transcended human languages. Art connects people and makes one learn about others’ history.

The movie and the article gives more details and especially the film vividly makes the history come alive. One, with their own imagination, is never adequate in decoding what is actually going on behind arts and the real context. And the film perfectly presents that image to us.
