“Adam’s Mixtape: I Still Love You Eve!” (Neils Armbruster)

1. The main chorus in “As It Was” by Harry Styles reflects what Adam would have been thinking following Eve’s fall into temptation. Styles sings “In this world it’s just us, you know it’s not the same as it was.” Strong parallels can be drawn between these lyrics and Adam’s condition because it is only Adam and Eve in the world. In addition, after Eve commits sin, Adam and Eve begin to lose affection for each other, and their relationship is no longer “the same as it was.” Lastly, the song gives the feeling that the conditions that Styles is remembering come from his naivete, just like Adam’s inability to understand that Eve’s feelings for him were not as strong as his for her.

2. “Brazil” by Declan Mckenna is another piece of music that is reminiscent of Adam’s emotions after both he and Eve commit sin. In the second verse, Mckenna sings “Oh, Lord! What have I become? I’m the face of God, I’m my father’s son.” In the patriarchal understanding of the Bible, Adam is typically viewed as a representation of God, as he is his son. After he and Eve commits sin, Adam feels extremely guilty, and the narrator in Paradise Lost notes “Thus Adam to himself lamented loud” (9.845). The feelings that Adam has after the sin is very similar to feelings Mckenna evokes in the excerpt above.

3. “we fell in love in october” by girl in red evokes similar feelings to what Adam had for Eve before sin was committed. Adam was completely enamored by Eve, and viewed her as everything he would need in the world. The song elicits the same emotion when girl in red sings, “You will be my girl, my girl, my girl, my girl, you will be my world, my world, my world, my world.” Evidently, girl in red is completely head over heels in love with who she is singing about, but the song has some indescribable feeling that the relationship will not last. The same scenario comes true with Adam, as he and Eve fall apart after they commit sin.

4. Another song that elucidates the same feelings that Adam had for Eve is “Missing Piece” by Vance Joy. In the chorus, Joy sings “You know when you’re by my side, darling, nothing can bring us down. It’s like when you’re far away from me, I get lost in the crowd.” Adam continually wanted to do his work in close proximity to Eve, as he was so enamored that he could not stand not being in her company, which Joy connects with in the song. The first line of the excerpt is very prophetic as the first time that Eve convinces Adam to let her do their chores separately, their world comes crashing down. In other words, Adam would connect to this lyric after the fall as he would think that Satan would be unable to convince both him and Eve if they were together.

5. “Losing My Religion” is a strong example of a song that Adam would listen to after he and Eve committed sin. In the song, R.E.M. sing “Consider this the slip that brought me to my knees, failed…. I thought that I heard you laughing, I thought that I heard you sing, I think I thought I saw you try, but that was just a dream.” For Adam, the slip would be the sin that Eve committed, which ended their idyllic living. After the slip, Adam and Eve lived in horror of what they had done, with their living conditions severely deteriorated. In the second section of the excerpt, Adam would be reminiscing on the unconditional love he had for Eve before she betrayed both of them.

6. “Apologize” by One Republic documents the resentment that Adam begins to hold for Eve after she commits sin and completely destroys their idyllic world. In the first verse, One Republic sings, “You tell me that you need me, then you go and cut me down, but wait. You tell me that you’re sorry, didn’t think I’d turn around, and say that it’s too late to apologize.” Adam would connect resolutely with these lyrics as he was under the impression that Eve loved him, but then she betrayed him by falling into Satan’s trap and defying God. After that, Adam lost his affection for Eve, and will no longer simply accept Eve’s apologies. Thus, Adam would relate strongly to the second sentence of the excerpt as he thinks it is too late for Eve to apologize.

7. “I Love You So” by the Walters encapsulates conflicted feelings towards Eve after the fall. In the opening verse, The Walters sing, “Saying I’m the one, but it’s your actions that speak louder, giving me love when you are down and need another. I’ve got to get away and let you go, I’ve got to get over, but I love you so.” Adam loses much of his affection for Eve after she commits sin because that has betrayed his trust, and even her professions of love to him cannot take that back. Yet, undeniably, Adam was completely enamored by Eve before. Thus, just as the song evokes, Adam is trying to block out Eve because of what she did but is struggling because he still cannot entirely separate himself from her.
