“We are all more strong together”: Vampires & Blood Drives at Emory Libraries

By Gaby Hale, Outreach Archivist at Rose Library

Ready to get deep into the Halloween spirit this October? You have some great opportunities at Emory’s Libraries, including a blood drive!

Blood Drive on October 30th

Emory Libraries and Museum Wellness Committee is sponsoring a blood drive with the American Red Cross on Oct. 30 from 11am–4pm in Woodruff Library’s Jones Room. Anyone can sign up to do a good deed and give blood during this event! Bram Stoker wrote in “Dracula” that “we are strong, each in our purpose, and we are all more strong together.” By giving blood, you are helping support the members of our collective community during this time of great need across the southeast. Those who donate blood will also receive a $10 Amazon gift card! You can sign up to give blood here: https://www.redcrossblood.org/give.html/drive-results?zipSponsor=EmoryLibrary

If you have any questions about this blood drive (or if you’re interested in volunteering), please contact Emory Librarian Peter Shirts at pshirts [at] emory [dot] edu.

Bram Stoker at Rose Library

The Stuart A. Rose Manuscript, Archives, and Rare Book Library is the home of the John Moore Bram Stoker collection, a wealth of items from and related to the Irish author Bram Stoker. John Moore collected over 4,000 items, including different editions of Stoker’s works in various languages, playbills of Dracula and vampire-related productions, and memorabilia. The collection also includes the handwritten manuscript of Stoker’s novel “Lady of the Shroud”, which has been digitized and is available to view online.

The John Moore Bram Stoker collection is a relatively new addition to Rose Library, having arrived three years ago in October 2021. Since then, the collection has been used heavily in exhibits, classes, and in the reading room. This semester alone, we have an English class diving deep into the papers, as well as two research fellows who consulted the collection for their research on Dracula. While we currently do not have an exhibit up about the collection, the papers are open for anyone to use in the Reading Room. You can learn how to make an appointment on the Rose Library website.
