Top 10 Secrets of the Library

The library strives to offer the best services possible to our patrons, and this goes far beyond books. However, we often find that people are genuinely surprised by some of the services we offer. Based on this, we’ve compiled a list of the library’s top ten “secrets” to share.

1.  We check out more than just books and movies.
We have calculators, HDMI and VGA cables, AV adaptors for laptops, wireless keyboards and mice, flipcams, camcorders, microphones, and headsets. If there’s a tool you need, we just may have it!

2.  Always adding new books and DVDs.
We’re constantly adding to our collection. From the latest bestsellers to the hottest movies. The easiest way to see what we’re adding is through our Popular Reading Collection libguide!

3.  A plethora of tools.
The computers in rooms 129 and 131 have the Adobe Creative Suite and Final Cut Pro.  All of our computers come equipped with the advanced tools used in classes here at Oxford, such as Stata, MatLab, and Mathematica.

4.  A space for learning.
We support your desire to learn in various ways. Besides a large collection of books in the stacks, we also offer workshops to help you learn how to use the tools we offer to their fullest potential, access to Lynda.com tutorials, and plenty of private group study spaces.

5.  Our space is your space.
The library isn’t just for studying. We’re happy to host your group meetings and events in our spaces. Just ask a librarian for help with scheduling!

6.  Stuff happens, and we’re here to help.
Personal computers have become indispensable in academics, and we understand the frustration that arises when one’s has been damaged or stolen. We offer long-term laptop loans to students whose computers are being repaired or have been stolen.

7.  If we’re open, we can help.
At any time the library is open there is a librarian available to help you with research, even up to 2 AM. You can make an appointment, or just walk in. Never be afraid to ask a question!

8.  Contact us any way that suits you.
You can reach us in any way that makes the most sense to you. In person, on the phone, by text or IM, or by email. You can even tweet us or like us on Facebook!

9.  If we don’t have it, we can get it.
With a little planning and thinking ahead, we can get you access to the materials you need, even if we don’t own them. If another Emory library owns it, we can most likely have it sent here for you to check out. If Emory doesn’t own it at all, we can place a request through InterLibrary Loan to get it for you!

10.  You ask, we deliver.
If you have a suggestion, we want to hear it! Is there a book or movie you think we should have? A service you think we should provide? A wall you think you should be a whiteboard? Let us know! This library is (literally) built on our patrons’ input!

The biggest secret you should take away from this blog post is simply “Ask a librarian.” Regardless of the question or request, we’re here to listen! More importantly, we’re here to help.
