The author of this article is Charlie Campbell, who is the East Asia news correspondent for TIME magazine. Campbell seems like he could be part of a “discourse community” that is interested in learning about different current events in East Asia. Upon research, I found that Campbell has covered other events such as “turbulent elections in Cambodia, the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, and Thailand’s military coup,” so I think his goal is to cover complex political issues in South-East Asia so that Western individuals can understand it.

The article was published in the United States, and therefore, the intended audience is for people who live in the United States who are interested in learning more about the political climate in China. The article is making an effort to assess China’s circumstances in an unbiased way.

The author’s thesis is that Xi Jinping’s coronation for his third term threatens unknown instability since it symbolizes autocracy despite Xi’s belief that this would speed up China’s development. The author also points out the fact that Xi is now making himself into an emperor, limiting dissent, and causing difficulty for travel due to the zero-Covid policy. The author uses word choice such as Xi’s “belligerence”, “deepening demagoguery” and “new Cold War” to show his concern for Xi’s political choices.

The author appeals to primarily logos and ethos. For example, it appeals to logos by stating facts such as “The World Bank has named supply-chain disruptions stemming from China lockdowns as driving a cut in global growth—forecast this year at 2.9%, down from 5.7% in 2021. ” to show how Xi is causing problems overseas. By using the World Bank, the author also employs a sort of ethos. Overall, the author’s argument is conveyed effectively because of the heavy usage of ethos and logos throughout the article.
