Prompt 9: Arielle Wallenstein

  1. What “form/format” are you going to write in?

I created a powerpoint presentation for my final assignment. I embedded a video clip, excerpts from news articles, and different charts to communicate and support my ideas.
  2. Brainstorm/Describe your potential audience.

The potential audience that my presentation was intended for is someone who is interested in public health. I tried to stray away from speaking too much to the biology of HIV and AIDS, which is something I have studied extensively in previous science course, and instead focus on who HIV and AIDS impact the most, health disparities, and the history of HIV and AIDS.
  3. List out at least 3 generic conventions related to either your selected form, or your potential audience.

    1. I included a clip of a Grey’s Anatomy episode that I found relevant to how different discourses talk about HIV and AIDS. The episode was from 2010, but the clip was of a flashback to medical treatment of AIDS in 1982, and the actors in the clip are playing the role of doctors, but this is entertainment and not a true recording of an actual patient interaction. I found it very interesting to consider all of the different layers that underlie this portrayal. (The Time Warp. (2010). YouTube. Retrieved December 17, 2022, from https://youtu.be/SfbLCLOdaWg.)
    2. I included both the initial news article about the first patients diagnosed with AIDS and inserted more recent stories of HIV and AIDS in the news. I think this is interesting from a public health perspective to consider how the way HIV and AIDS was discussed in the news may have impacted the number of people willing to ask for help, get tested, and stick to treatment regimens. While treatment has improved over time, I wonder to what extent the changing stigma surrounding HIV and AIDS has impacted death rates and testing rates. (Ryan, B. (2022, July 27). 3. I also included a timeline of the HIV and AIDS response to share milestones and key events each decade. I think it is really interesting to study which events preceded others, and what was prioritized at different points in time. (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. (n.d.). HIV/AIDS timeline.
