Reading Journal 8 – Grace Li

After writing my midterm essay, I realized that I had trouble making my ideas flow. I think I struggled with making sure the ideas that I had were conveyed in the most appropriate way. The poem by Matthew Buxton “vii,” was content heavy. It included multiple discourse communities and contained many different heavy themes related to love, relationships, and religion. I wanted to make sure my word choice when writing did the author and other discourse communities justice. Therefore, I felt like it was challenging for me to ensure I was explaining my ideas in the most appropriate and effective away.

Because the poem was so content heavy, I also had trouble staying within the word count. The poem had a lot to dissect formatively and thematically. I felt bad not addressing certain ideas and lines within the poem. I wanted to quote most of the poem. Therefore, I would like to learn how to strategically choose quotes that would most effectively support my thesis when writing a close reading essay.

Nevertheless, I felt like my strengths was my reliance on the text and heavy analysis of the religious references. I tried my best to interpret the text at face value without always thinking about the author’s own interpretation. Additionally, I made sure to look up certain lines to see where they could have been referenced in other texts such as the Bible.
