FAQs

What happens when my child comes into the lab?

If your child is participating in an in-person study, you will be asked to come into the Child Study Center on Emory’s Atlanta campus. On arrival, you will be given a parking validation. When the researcher is ready, they will meet you and bring you into the lab. You will be asked to fill out a consent form before your child participates. Your child will then be brought into a study room. Usually, your child will play games or listen to stories with the researcher. These games allow us to study various topics in child development. Most of our studies are roughly 30 minutes. After completing the study, your child will receive a toy for their participation. We will send you a gift certificate as a “thank you” for participating in the study.

Are any of the studies invasive?

Our studies are never invasive. We are able to collect data for our research through games, stories, and simple tasks. Your child should not only feel comfortable participating, but they often are excited and have fun when they come into the lab.

Where do the studies take place?

Our lab performs in-person and online studies. If you sign up for an in-person study, you will come to the Child Study Center on Emory’s Atlanta campus.  If you sign up for an online study, we will send you a Zoom link and meet with you and your child online.

How do I sign my child up?

We’re so excited to meet you! Please register your child with the Child Study Center first. If you would like to participate in our lab specifically, please email us directly as well.

Will my child be filmed?

For data collection purposes, your child will be filmed during the study. However, these videos will not be shared with anyone outside of the lab. In the consent form, you can provide your signature that would allow us to share your child’s video. This allows us to use your child’s video in future presentations, and it helps us to describe the study procedures to audiences.

Will my child’s identity be protected?

In the data collection process, your child’s name will be associated with a number ID. Your child’s name and picture will not be shown in any of our data analyses or written research. If you request to be removed from the Child Study Center database, no labs at Emory University will have you or your child’s contact information.

If you choose to allow us to use your child’s study video, your child’s name will still not be used.

Do I receive compensation for participating?

We do not provide compensation for participating in studies. However, we will provide you with a gift card as a “thank you” for participating.
