Early Plates

Beyond ancient display contexts, the history of display for many marble cineraria can be tracked through the plates of engravers such as Giovanni Battista Piranesi or similar early archaeologists, artists, and art collectors, such as Giampietro Campana, who published etchings, engravings, or documentation of excavations.

Pietro Santi Bartoli recorded multiple views of tombs with cineraria in situ, and his engravings serve as valuable documents of lost cineraria, wall decoration, and grave goods which hint at the ephemeral and ritual contexts of display to consider.
