Policy Changes

The humanitarian crisis occurring, in regards to the migrants and refugees across the world, is continuing to increase. The deaths toll increases each year to unprecedented levels. And rather  than helping this issue, the countries who have the means to do so rather tighten their restrictions and border policy in response. There are many greater, more effective, and more moral solutions to this issue. With attempting to strengthen the borders, many refugees and migrants still get through, and rather than having a system in place to help they cause more deaths. For example here is an article about a time the EU decided to tighten its border in 2016: https://www.cnbc.com/2016/04/06/eu-executive-to-present-steps-to-tighten-external-border-controls.html. This is one of countless instances. One pushing factor of these types of policies is the rhetoric coming from the politicians and people of power in the country and the mislead notion that everyone from a given country or continent wants to come to their country. As stated in the Vacchiano article, only .15% of the total size of the European Union. If people were to learn and realize what is going on I believe people would change their minds and have a more open mindset. If politicians would change their rhetoric and more focus on policies to incorporate those people rather than force them out, I believe a difference would be made and many lives would be saved. Although this seems like an easy solution, I believe it will take much time and potentially a different generation to see change.
