I am interested in the program but am not affiliated with any of the participating institutions. Can I still apply to the program?

The TITANS training program currently requires affiliation with Addis Ababa University and Bahir Dar University.

I am interested in pursuing a degree, is TITANS a degree or credit granting program?

There is no degree or educational credit granted for your participation. Successful completion of the TITANS mentored research training program will be acknowledged through a certificate.

If I’m selected to participate in the program, can I choose my mentors?

No, the program leadership will assign team mentors based on the alignment between the team’s research interests and the mentor’s areas of expertise, among those mentors recruited for the program. Each scholar will have a primary (in-country) mentor and a secondary (Emory-based) mentor. Scholars may identify and seek mentorship from additional mentors to further advance their professional development.  

How will scholars be selected to participate in the program?

Program applications will be reviewed in two stages. First, a preliminary review will be conducted by program staff to determine applicant eligibility. Applications deemed eligible will proceed to the second stage of review for evaluation by program directors and assistant program directors to assess credentials, research experience, and program fit. 

 

If I’m not selected to participate in the current year’s program cohort, can I reapply for a subsequent program year?

If you have previously applied for the Scholars Program and you were not selected, you may be eligible to reapply. However, this will be reviewed and determined on a case-by-case basis and must be approved by the program directors and assistant program directors

If I was previously selected but unable to attend the program due to extenuating circumstances, can I reapply for a subsequent program year?

It depends. We will review on a case-by-case basis.

Do you need to be full-time at AAU/BDU?

Full-time applicants at AAU and BDU will have priority, however, part-time students at BDU and AAU will be considered individuallyIf you are not associated with BDU or AAU, we cannot accept your application at this time.  

Do we include MPH-prepared scholars?

PhD-prepared applicants at AAU and BDU will get priority, however, masters-prepared people may also apply and be considered. Among pre-doctoral applicants, priority will be given to Assistant Professors and individuals with equivalent research experience.   

Can I expect to receive a laptop or other technology as a scholar?

While we do not supply laptops for scholars and mentors, we strongly encourage you to bring your own device as you will be expected to access online training materials and make progress on individual and team deliverables during your time at Emory. We offer comprehensive support and access to Emory software through desktop computers available at Emory Library, empowering you to seamlessly integrate technology into your research endeavors, however, this is only available while scholars and mentors are in Atlanta, GA, USA 

I am interested in applying to multiple programs, can I do this?

We only accept one application. You may only apply to either the mentors or scholars’ program, but not both.  

FAQ’s for Mentors

What is the time commitment required for participation in the program?

Mentors will be required to attend a 2-week training program in early January, located in Atlanta, GA. After successful completion of the training, mentors are assigned to a team and will be asked to commit to regular meetings with their mentee at least twice a month during the trainee’s entire 12-month training phase.

All mentors will also participate in a one (1) hour quarterly sessions.

Will I be compensated for my participation in the program?

Unfortunately, mentors will not be monetarily compensated for their participation in the program; however, as a result of program participation, mentors will have access to a network of public health leaders from prominent global health agencies and institutions and an opportunity to develop skill sets to enhance their own professional development. They will also participate in a 2 week orientation period at the beginning of the program in January.

What qualifies someone as mid- to senior career level?

For the TITANS program individuals are considered mid-career if they are PhD-prepared and hold the rank of Assistant Professor. Individuals are considered senior in their career if they are PhD-prepared and hold the rank of Associate Professor OR are an MD with a specialty or sub-specialty senior.
