The Scholarly Communications Office will hold several workshops for graduate students that address copyright law and author rights and responsibilities surrounding theses and dissertations. Attending one of these 50 minute workshops will help prepare for thesis or dissertation copyright concerns and inform future academic publishing endeavors. Beginning graduate students are encouraged to attend.
The workshops will answer questions like …
- Everyone quotes the work of other scholars in their dissertation. As long as the quotes are acknowledged, does this ever raise copyright issues?
- I found a photo online on a public website. Can I include it in my dissertation since everything’s free on the internet?
- Should I pay to register copyright for my dissertation?
- I have this great film clip from the 1940s with images and music that I’d like to include with my dissertation. Are there different copyright rules for different audio-visual formats?
- Chapter 1 of my dissertation has been published in a journal. Is this a problem?
See the list of dates, times and locations below. Each workshop will allow time for specific questions. Some sessions will have a particular focus to address concerns specific to a discipline, so choose the session that best fits your needs.
If you cannot attend any session, a video workshop and a FAQ are available on Blackboard (https://classes.emory.edu) under the organization name Copyright Education Initiative (click on Copyright & Your Thesis or Dissertation in left hand column of the Blackboard page).
If you attended one of the workshops last semester, no need to attend again, but feel free to contact the Scholarly Communications Office (scholcomm [at] listserv [dot] cc [dot] emory [dot] edu) with questions.
