As a delegate registered in Colorado, I stumped on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC for the National Science Foundation as a part of the Biological Ecological Science Coalition (BESC) Congressional Visits Day. After a day workshopping how to effectively communicate with members of the United States congress, I spent a full day on Capitol Hill meeting with nine congressional offices about increasing the Fiscal Year 2018 budget for the National Science Foundation. This was an eye-opening experience into science policy and demonstrated how I can personally get involved as a scientist in politics. As an NSF Graduate Research Fellow I felt like I fulfilled a duty to NSF by demonstrating the importance of funding young scientists to legislative decision-makers.
