To replicate my open-door policy, I instituted a virtual open door. In pre-COVID times, the students would know that I’m open to interruption if my door was ajar or open. To mimic this, when I was open to interruption, I sent an email to all the students in my class and those who I was mentoring and let them know that I was in my Zoom room for a specific time. That could be a spur of the moment thing or a time later in the day when interruption was okay. This was done in addition to formal office hours, which I also extended by an hour per week and additional scheduled meetings.
